At least S$18,000 has vanished into a sophisticated social media impersonation ring targeting parents across Singapore.
Hijacking WhatsApp to Target Families
The deception begins when bad actors breach a student’s messaging account. Operating from inside the compromised profile, the perpetrators message parents directly with urgent news: the child has supposedly won a spot in a specialized youth exchange programme or an artificial intelligence-related course.
To manufacture intense pressure and an air of authenticity, the scammers demand immediate financial commitments to lock down the placement.
Fake Subsidies and PayNow QR Codes
Families are fed elaborate fabrications designed to bypass their skepticism. Victims are sent forged consent forms emblazoned with the names and logos of genuine official institutions and agencies.
To sweeten the trap, the fraudsters assure parents that the costs are heavily subsidized and will ultimately be reimbursed. The money trail is then funneled through PayNow QR codes.
In multiple cases, the financial extortion does not stop at the first transaction. Scammers loop back to demand secondary payments, claiming the initial transfer was botched and needs urgent rectification.
Uncovering the Deception Too Late
The reality of the scam usually hits parents only after they cross-check the claims directly with their children or when sudden alerts land from their financial institutions.
Defensive Steps Recommended by Authorities
With at least eight cases recorded in less than a month, the Singapore Police Force is pushing a strict preventative protocol for the public:
- Enable two-step verification on WhatsApp accounts to prevent unauthorized access.
- Verify suspicious requests through official channels, such as contacting the ScamShield Helpline at 1799.
- Contact banks immediately to report and freeze fraudulent transactions if a scam is suspected.
- Lodge a formal police report without delay.
