On December 3rd, coinciding with the United Nations International Day of Persons with Disabilities,we highlight the impactful work of Freedom Solutions Australia,a leading institution dedicated to improving the lives of people living with disability through customized equipment and adaptive cycling programs. Formerly known as Technical Aid to the Disabled (TAD), the organization is celebrating 50 years of innovation and service.

For half a century, freedom Solutions Australia has been dedicated to creating solutions where none previously existed. beginning with a small group of volunteers, the organization has grown into an interstate operation, impacting the lives of thousands. To date, they have produced over 54,000 pieces of equipment, each designed to enhance independence and quality of life.
Freedom Wheels: enabling Mobility Through Adaptive Cycling
A cornerstone of Freedom Solutions Australia’s work is the “Freedom Wheels” program, established in 2001. This program focuses on providing adaptive bikes and trikes to children and adults with disabilities, enabling them to experience the joy and benefits of cycling. Adaptive cycles are specifically designed to accommodate a wide range of physical and cognitive needs, offering stability, support, and customized features.
Collaboration and Community Engagement
Freedom Solutions Australia actively engages with the disability community and related organizations. Yvonne Poon, Bicycle NSW Membership Coordinator, recently attended the organization’s 50th-anniversary event at their NSW headquarters in Northmead, Sydney, after connecting with the team at the Source Disability Expo.
“It was a lovely opportunity to learn more about the history of the organization and meet the dedicated volunteers working behind the scenes,” Poon shared. She was impressed by the breadth of volunteer opportunities available,extending beyond engineering to include administrative support,courier services,and even tasks like gluing and painting.
