‘Billy Elliot’ Comes Full Circle: Lim Sun-woo Returns to the Stage

Seoul, South Korea – The musical “Billy Elliot” is captivating audiences once again in Seoul, with a particularly poignant storyline unfolding both on and off stage. Lim Sun-woo, who first appeared as young Billy in the production’s 2010 Korean debut, has returned to the role – this time as the adult Billy, mirroring the musical’s narrative of growth, and transformation.

A Story of Dreams and Determination

Set in a 1980s British coal-mining town grappling with a miner’s strike, “Billy Elliot” follows a young boy who discovers a passion for ballet, defying societal expectations and financial hardship to pursue his dream. The musical, based on the 2000 film of the same name, has resonated globally, winning 10 Tony Awards in 2009 Korea Herald and being seen by over 12 million people worldwide.

From Young Billy to Adult Billy: Lim Sun-woo’s Journey

Lim Sun-woo’s return to the stage is described as a “miracle” by Park Myung-sung, producer of “Billy Elliot” and head of Seensee Korea JoongAng Daily. Now a principal dancer with the Universal Ballet, his journey closely parallels Billy’s own, making his portrayal particularly impactful. He reflects on the experience, stating he feels “really happy” to dance alongside the young actors portraying his younger self Chosun.

The Current Cast and Production

The current production features five young actors sharing the role of Billy: Jo Yoon-woo, Kim Woo-jin, Lim Sun-u, Kim Seung-ju, and Park Ji-hoo Korea JoongAng Daily. These young performers underwent a year and six months of training, mastering ballet, tap dancing, singing, acting, and acrobatics. Veteran actress Park Jeong-ja returns for her third time as ‘grandmother’ Chosun.

A Unique Approach to the Korean Production

Ed Burnside, the overseas co-director, highlighted a unique aspect of the Korean production: the emphasis on individuality among the four Billys. Rather than striving for uniformity, the production celebrates each actor’s distinct personality and energy, enhancing the vitality of the performance Chosun.
