Billy Joel Says Neurologist Disallowed Driving and Live Performances
Music icon Billy Joel revealed in an October 15, 2026, interview with The Hollywood Reporter that his neurologist has barred him from driving and performing live, stating that every stage show feels “like you’re getting a concussion.” The 77-year-old singer, who was diagnosed with normal pressure hydrocephalus (NPH) in 2025, discussed his uncertain touring future while preparing to auction off more than 70 motorcycles from his personal collection.
Normal Pressure Hydrocephalus Diagnosis and Brain Surgery
Joel underwent brain surgery after his NPH diagnosis in May 2025, which involved doctors implanting a shunt in his brain. Speaking on SiriusXM’s The Billy Joel Channel, the singer reported that the procedure improved his memory and balance. However, doctors remain cautious about physical stress, requiring him to undergo a series of further medical tests before any potential return to the stage. Describing his initial reaction to the illness in a 2025 interview, he noted, I know a lot of people are worried about me and my health, but I’m okay,
and reassured fans, I’m not going anywhere, I’m here. I’m still here.
