Russian pharmaceutical company Biocad has begun a Phase I clinical trial for BCD-225, a new drug candidate designed to treat bladder cancer. The trial, currently underway in multiple Russian cities, aims to evaluate the safety and determine the optimal therapeutic dose of this immunotherapeutic agent.

Evaluating Safety and Therapeutic Potential

The primary objective of the Phase I trial is to assess the safety and tolerability of BCD-225. Researchers will also analyze the drug’s pharmacokinetic, pharmacodynamic, and immunological characteristics. A key component of the study will be evaluating the drug’s efficacy when used in combination with Bacille Calmette-Guérin (BCG), a standard treatment for non-muscle invasive bladder cancer [1].

Biocad believes that combining BCD-225 with BCG will enhance the local anti-tumor immune response in patients diagnosed with high-risk non-muscle invasive bladder cancer. Bladder cancer is a significant global health concern, ranking as the seventh most prevalent malignancy in men and the seventeenth in women [1]. Approximately 75% of patients are initially diagnosed with non-muscle invasive disease.

Current Standard Treatment for Non-Muscle Invasive Bladder Cancer

The current standard treatment for non-muscle invasive bladder cancer involves removing the tumor through transurethral resection, followed by intravesical immunotherapy with the BCG vaccine. BCG treatment can last from one to three years, depending on the patient’s risk of recurrence [1].

Biocad’s Ongoing Clinical Research

In 2022, the Ministry of Health authorized Biocad to begin clinical trials for a therapy targeting spinal muscular atrophy, which is currently in Phase I-II trials [1].
