Bishop of Lincoln Arrested on Suspicion of Sexual Assault

The Bishop of Lincoln, the Right Reverend Stephen Conway, has been arrested on suspicion of sexual assault, prompting his suspension from ministry by the Church of England. Lincolnshire Police confirmed the arrest of a 68-year-old man as part of an ongoing investigation.

Details of the Investigation

According to Lincolnshire Police, the investigation relates to an allegation of sexual assault that occurred between 2018 and 2025 . Bishop Conway has been released on conditional bail.

Church of England Response

The Diocese of Lincoln announced Bishop Conway’s suspension following a complaint made to the Church of England’s National Safeguarding Team . The complaint was initially made at the end of January. The Church has referred the matter to the appropriate statutory authorities.

The Bishop of Grantham, Dr. Nicholas Chamberlain, will serve as the Diocesan Bishop during the suspension period and provide support to those affected .

Background of Stephen Conway

Stephen Conway was installed as the Bishop of Lincoln in November 2023 . Prior to this, he served as Bishop of Ramsbury and Bishop of Ely. He has been a member of the House of Lords since 2014.

In 2024, Bishop Conway faced criticism in a report concerning the Church’s handling of allegations against John Smyth, though he stated he had acted within his authority .

Resignation from Post

Following his suspension, Bishop Conway has resigned from his position as Visitor to the Shrine of Our Lady of Walsingham . The Guardians of the Shrine of Our Lady of Walsingham acknowledged his work and will begin the process of selecting a successor.
