Bitcoin Surpasses Gold as Middle East Tensions Escalate

Bitcoin is demonstrating resilience amid heightened geopolitical uncertainty in the Middle East, outperforming traditional safe-haven assets like gold and stocks. While initially experiencing a dip following the escalation of conflict, Bitcoin has rebounded strongly, signaling a potential shift in investor sentiment.

Bitcoin’s Price Action and Technical Analysis

As of March 24, 2026, Bitcoin (BTC) is trading above $70,000, currently priced at $70,894.1 The cryptocurrency briefly fell to $67,000 as the situation in the Middle East worsened, marking a 15-day low, but quickly recovered to $72,000, exhibiting a bullish engulfing pattern.1

Since the conflict between the United States and Iran began on February 28, Bitcoin has generally trended upwards, rebounding to $74,000 on March 4 and reaching approximately $76,000 on March 17.1 This suggests a consistently rising rebound high, forming an upward channel.

Gold’s Declining Performance

Conversely, gold prices are continuing their downward trajectory, with selling pressure dominating the market. Spot gold (XAUUSD) soared to $5,400 per ounce following the initial attacks, but subsequently declined to a low of $4,100, representing a cumulative loss of $1,300 per ounce (24%) and erasing all year-to-date gains.1

From a technical perspective, gold’s fall below the February 2 low of $4,400 indicates the completion of a head-and-shoulders top pattern, potentially signaling the complete of its six-year bull market and the beginning of a bear market.1

Why Bitcoin is Outperforming

Bitcoin has outperformed gold and the S&P 500 in the past month. River Financial reports 60-day returns of 12% for BTC, compared to -16% for gold and -4% for the S&P 500.4 This pattern has been observed during previous global events, including the COVID-19 pandemic, the Russia-Ukraine war, the 2023 US regional banking crisis, and the 2020 US-Iran crisis.4

Currently, BTC trades at $71,023, up 3.93% in the past day, while gold trades at $4,413, down 3.55% over the same period, marking its worst week in four decades.4 The S&P 500 is trading at 6,585.28 points, up 1.21% in the past 24 hours.4

Bitcoin’s higher long-term return on investment (ROI) is attracting investors. Over the past decade, Bitcoin’s ROI has been +15,355%, compared to +289.7% for the S&P 500 and +125.8% for gold.4

Potential Scenarios and Outlook

Capital flight is likely to favor Bitcoin as a risk asset, potentially driving its price above $80,000 in the short term. Yet, if the situation in the Middle East deteriorates and rising oil prices fuel inflation, gold prices could surpass the $4,400 resistance level.1 This could negate the downside signal for gold and potentially suppress Bitcoin’s rebound, leading to sideways movement between $60,000 and $75,000.
