Bloober Team Commits to Physical Game Disks Despite Industry Shift

Bloober Team plans to keep manufacturing physical editions of its video games as long as market conditions allow, Chief Executive Officer Piotr Babieno stated in an interview with GamesRadar+, Gamereactor Norge reported. The commitment comes as major platform holders adjust their hardware strategies, with PlayStation signaling potential plans to phase out physical disk production entirely by 2028.

Babieno acknowledged that digital distribution remains simpler, cheaper, and more profitable for the Polish horror game studio. However, he emphasized that physical game boxes create a lasting emotional connection between players and developers. Tymon Smektala, director of Bloober publishing subsidiary Broken Mirror Games and former director of the Dying Light series, echoed those sentiments, noting that both executives grew up collecting physical media as a central part of their gaming hobby.

Onyx: The Dark Grip Spearheads Switch 2 Strategy

The studio’s physical media discussions surround the upcoming horror title Onyx: The Dark Grip. Developed by Bloober Team and published by Broken Mirror Games, the project is planned as a third-party exclusive for Nintendo’s successor console, currently referred to as the Switch 2, built exclusively for handheld play.

While studio leaders champion physical releases, Babieno clarified that their stance reflects personal preference rather than a blanket guarantee for every future catalog title. The feasibility of producing physical boxes depends on ongoing manufacturing logistics, even as the studio weighs the undeniable financial upside of digital storefronts.
