Brûlon-Loué Blood Donation Association Engages Youth, Addresses Declining Donor Rates

The Brûlon-Loué Voluntary Blood Donation Association (ADSBBL) is actively working to cultivate the next generation of blood donors, recognizing a critical demand to replenish the donor pool as existing donors age. A recent outreach effort saw the association connect with students at Saint-Michel de Loué college, aiming to instill the importance of blood donation and solidarity from a young age.

Educational Session for Future Donors

On Thursday, Michel Drouin, president of the ADSBBL, met with 17 students participating in a first aid workshop at Saint-Michel de Loué college. The session served as both an educational and civic engagement opportunity. Drouin detailed the components of blood – red blood cells, platelets and plasma – and explained their vital roles in the body. He also outlined the basic requirements for blood donation, including age, weight, and overall health.

To reinforce learning, Drouin concluded the session with a quiz. Students demonstrated keen interest and attentiveness, receiving commemorative pens, magnets, and calendars promoting blood donation.

Ambassadors for a Vital Cause

While the students are not yet eligible to donate – the minimum age is 18 – they were encouraged to become ambassadors for blood donation within their families and communities in the Brûlon and Loué areas. This peer-to-peer approach aims to broaden awareness and encourage potential donors.

Upcoming Blood Drive

The ADSBBL is hosting its next blood drive on Tuesday, April 14, starting at 3 p.m. At the Vègre et Champagne room in Brûlon. This event provides a crucial opportunity for community members to contribute to the blood supply.

The Growing Need for Blood and Plasma Donations

The ADSBBL’s efforts align with a broader national trend. As reported in Ouest-France, the association highlighted the increasing need for both blood and plasma donations during its general assembly on February 7, 2025. The aging donor base necessitates proactive recruitment to maintain adequate supplies.
