Nationwide Blood Shortage Puts Patients at Risk

A critical blood shortage across the United States is raising concerns for hospitals, blood banks, and, most importantly, patients who depend on regular transfusions for survival. The shortage is impacting access to vital treatments, leaving individuals facing life-threatening situations.

The Personal Impact: Shagah Zakerion’s Story

Shagah Zakerion, a cancer patient from Tulsa, Oklahoma, is one of many individuals directly affected by the dwindling blood supply. Battling myelodysplastic syndrome, a type of blood cancer, since her teenage years, Zakerion relies on frequent platelet and blood cell transfusions to manage her condition. She has received over 200 infusions of donor cells. “If I don’t get the platelets, if I don’t get the blood cells, I start to observe very dangerous effects on my body,” Zakerion explained. Transfusions restore her strength, which is depleted by chemotherapy.

Recently, Zakerion has experienced difficulty obtaining the necessary transfusions. “I’ve really been able to get what I needed when I needed it until about a month ago,” she stated. The shortage has created a sense of fear and uncertainty as she continues her fight against cancer. “If I don’t get what I need, I could die. I mean, it’s a very real reality, it’s something I think about a lot,” Zakerion shared.

National Trends and Contributing Factors

The American Red Cross reports a significant decline in blood supplies nationwide, with local supplies down approximately 35% over the past month. News9 reports that winter weather has played a role in the shortage, leading to low donor turnout and the cancellation of blood drives. Matt Trotter of the American Red Cross emphasized the delicate balance of the donor base, stating, “I think people don’t understand that the need is so constant and the donor base is so small, any change is going to upset that balance.”
