New Biomarker Discovery Offers Hope for Less Invasive Crohn’s Disease Diagnosis

In individuals with Crohn’s disease, the blood virome was enriched with phages that target bacteria commonly found in the gut (anti-bacteroidota phages).This suggests that thes phages are translocating from the intestine into the bloodstream, potentially due to the increased intestinal permeability – or “leaky gut” – characteristic of Crohn’s disease.
Healthy individuals, on the other hand, primarily exhibited phages associated with bacteria typically found in the blood (anti-Acinetobacter). This distinct viral signature effectively differentiates Crohn’s patients from healthy controls, a feat previously unattainable with analysis of the fecal virome, which is known for its high variability.

This discovery positions the blood virome as a promising biomarker for Crohn’s disease. The potential benefits are meaningful:
