Blue Jays Open Spring Training with 3-0 Win Over Phillies

DUNEDIN, FL – The Toronto Blue Jays began their Grapefruit League schedule with a 3-0 victory over the Philadelphia Phillies on Saturday at TD Ballpark. Daulton Varsho and Sean Keys both hit home runs to propel the Blue Jays to a successful start to spring training.

Varsho and Keys Power Blue Jays Offense

Daulton Varsho, starting as the designated hitter, launched a solo home run in the fifth inning, giving the Blue Jays the lead. In the sixth inning, first baseman Sean Keys followed with a two-run home run, extending Toronto’s advantage.

Strong Pitching Performance

Toronto’s pitching staff, led by starting pitcher Eric Lauer, held the Phillies to just four hits across nine shutout innings. The Blue Jays recorded nine hits against Phillies pitching.

First Game Post-World Series Appearance

This game marked the Blue Jays’ first contest since a narrow 5-4 extra-innings loss to the Los Angeles Dodgers in Game 7 of the World Series.

Roster Changes and Spring Outlook

The Blue Jays have undergone significant roster changes during the offseason, including the departure of shortstop Bo Bichette to the New York Mets. Toronto has added infielder Kazuma Okamoto, and right-handed pitchers Dylan Cease and Cody Ponce to the roster. Okamoto joins the team after an 11-year career in Nippon Professional Baseball, although Cease arrives with seven seasons of MLB experience with the Chicago White Sox and San Diego Padres. Ponce was signed after a dominant 17-1 season with the Hanwha Eagles in the Korean Baseball Organization (KBO), where he earned MVP honors.

Toronto will continue its spring training schedule on Sunday with a game against the Boston Red Sox.
