Blue Jays Add Infield Depth, Claim Ben Cowles off Waivers from Cubs

The Toronto Blue Jays have claimed infielder Ben Cowles off waivers from the Chicago Cubs, the team announced on Wednesday.1 To create a roster spot, the Blue Jays placed right-handed pitcher Bowden Francis on the 60-day injured list.1

Cowles’ Journey to Toronto

Cowles, 26, has yet to develop his Major League debut. He was originally drafted by the Latest York Yankees in the 10th round of the 2021 MLB draft.2 He was later traded to the Cubs in 2024 as part of the deal that sent Mark Leiter Jr. Back to the Yankees.2

After a stint with the Cubs, Cowles was claimed off waivers by the Chicago White Sox, only to be claimed back by the Cubs in January.4 This marks the second time the Cubs have lost Cowles via waivers.4

Skillset and Minor League Performance

Cowles is known for his speed and defensive capabilities, with experience at multiple infield positions. He has recorded double-digit stolen bases in each of the past four minor league seasons.4

His offensive performance has fluctuated. In 2024, he slashed .286/.372/.457 at the Double-A level, posting a 141 wRC+.2 However, his numbers dipped in 2025 at Triple-A, where he hit .235/.300/.371 with a 71 wRC+.3 His walk rate decreased from 10.4% in 2024 to 7.2% in 2025, while his strikeout rate increased from 17.7% to 28.8%.3

Blue Jays’ Infield Situation

The Blue Jays’ acquisition of Cowles adds depth to an infield undergoing changes. Bo Bichette departed in free agency, signing with the New York Mets.4 Andrés Giménez is expected to take over at shortstop, while Ernie Clement is projected to become the regular at second base.4 The team also signed Kazuma Okamoto to play third base, potentially shifting Addison Barger to a corner outfield role.4

Cowles’ presence, with his remaining option years, could give him an advantage over Leo Jiménez, who is out of options and would need to be kept on the big league roster or risk being exposed to waivers.1

Bowden Francis Injury Update

The move to add Cowles was made possible by placing Bowden Francis on the 60-day injured list. Francis will miss the entire 2026 season following Tommy John surgery.3 Despite missing the season, he will continue to accrue service time and remain eligible for arbitration in 2027.3
