PlayStation Shuts Down Bluepoint Games, Studio Behind Demon’s Souls and Shadow of the Colossus Remakes
PlayStation has shut down Bluepoint Games, the studio renowned for its critically acclaimed remakes of Demon’s Souls and Shadow of the Colossus. The closure, confirmed by PlayStation, will impact approximately 70 employees next month.
A Legacy of Remakes and Support Work
Founded in 2006 by former Retro Studios employees, Bluepoint Games initially focused on porting and remastering existing titles. The studio contributed to collections such as the God of War Collection, Metal Gear Solid HD Collection, and Uncharted: The Nathan Drake Collection. They also provided support on ports like PlayStation All-Stars, Flower, and Titanfall.
Critical Acclaim with Shadow of the Colossus and Demon’s Souls
Bluepoint Games gained widespread recognition for its 2018 remake of Shadow of the Colossus and the 2020 remake of Demon’s Souls, both lauded by critics and fans for their stunning visuals and faithful recreation of the original experiences. Sony acquired Bluepoint in 2021 following the success of the Demon’s Souls remake.
Canceled Live-Service Project and Unsuccessful Pitches
Prior to the closure, Bluepoint Games was developing a live-service God of War title, but the project was canceled in January 2025. The studio subsequently spent the past year pitching new game concepts to PlayStation, but was ultimately unable to secure funding for a new project.
PlayStation’s Statement
A PlayStation spokesperson stated to Bloomberg, “Bluepoint Games is an incredibly talented team and their technical expertise has delivered exceptional experiences for the PlayStation community. We thank them for their passion, creativity and craftmanship.”
Industry Challenges and Rising Development Costs
The closure of Bluepoint Games reflects the challenges facing the gaming industry, including rising development costs and changing player behavior. Sony has been adapting its business strategy to navigate these headwinds, as noted by Herman Hulst, a Sony executive.
