BMW Defends Subscription Model for Features, Citing Ongoing Costs of Technologies Like ADAS
BMW is defending its strategy of offering certain vehicle features via subscription, notably as it relates to technologies with continuous operational costs, such as Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS). The automaker argues this model allows for greater flexibility for consumers and a enduring revenue stream for features requiring ongoing investment.
Alexandra Landers, Head of BMW Product Communications, recently explained in an interview with Drive that the subscription model is well-suited to features that don’t represent a one-time cost for the company. This allows customers to initially lower the purchase price of a vehicle by opting out of certain features, with the option to activate them later as their needs evolve.
“If the owner determines that the feature is needed, it can be turned on for an additional fee,” Landers stated, citing the value of ADAS features during challenging driving conditions like heavy traffic as a prime example.
The core principle behind this approach centers on technologies that necessitate continuous data transmission or incur ongoing operational expenses. Real-time traffic facts, a feature reliant on constant data updates, was specifically mentioned as an example of a service that aligns with the subscription model. BMW believes this approach fairly distributes the cost of these continuously operating systems.
However,BMW has acknowledged past missteps with its subscription offerings. The company admitted that the initial rollout of a subscription for seat heating was poorly received and has as been discontinued. BMW has firmly stated it has no current plans to introduce subscription models for “power boost” features or to limit electric vehicle range through paid wireless updates.
Currently, the availability of subscription services varies depending on the specific BMW model, the market in which it’s sold, and the vehicle’s configuration. Consumers are encouraged to explore the options available for their vehicle to understand the full range of features and subscription possibilities.
