BMW i3: The Electric 3 Series Ushers in a New Era for the Brand
Munich – BMW has officially unveiled the all-new i3, the first fully electric 3 Series sedan, marking a significant step in the automaker’s Neue Klasse strategy. The i3 boasts an impressive range of up to 440 miles (EPA estimate) and a powerful electric drivetrain, signaling BMW’s commitment to a sustainable future without compromising on performance or driving dynamics.
A New Design Language
The i3 represents a departure in design for BMW, incorporating the latest battery technology, driver assistance systems, and infotainment features. While retaining the classic 3 Series proportions, the i3 features a modernized aesthetic with a slightly futuristic, shark-nosed front and distinctive new lighting elements. The car’s sleek profile is enhanced by flush door handles and gloss black accents.
Interior Innovation
Inside, the i3 showcases BMW’s latest interior technology, building upon the advancements seen in the iX3. A key highlight is the new Panoramic Vision display and Free-Cut central display screen, replacing the traditional bolt-on widescreen dash. Essential information is projected onto a black space at the bottom of the windscreen, closer to the driver’s eyeline, and customizable through the high-resolution central screen. The launch models feature the Veganza “Digital White” interior and the distinctive steering wheel from the iX3.
Performance and Range
The i3 50 xDrive model delivers 463 horsepower and 476 pound-feet of torque, thanks to dual electric motors on the front and rear axles. BMW estimates a range of up to 440 miles on a full charge, based on EPA testing. The Gen6 eDrive system, combined with an 800-volt technology and a smooth underbody, maximizes efficiency and range. Top-end models will feature specially designed 21-inch aerodynamic M-Sport rims.
Charging Capabilities
The i3 50 xDrive is equipped with 400kW DC fast charging capability, allowing for the addition of approximately 400km (249 miles) of range in just 10 minutes at compatible high-powered charging stations.
Sustainability at its Core
As with the BMW iX3, the i3 embodies a 360° approach to sustainability, focusing on decarbonization throughout the entire vehicle lifecycle – from development and supply chain to production and end-of-life. The new BMW i3 50xDrive achieves a CO2e advantage over a comparable model with an internal combustion engine after one to two years of leverage, depending on driving habits and electricity source. BMW is also focused on decarbonizing its supply chain and expanding its “Design for Circularity” principles.
Market Availability
The second Neue Klasse model, the BMW i3, continues BMW’s holistic approach to sustainability. Pricing and on-the-road launch dates for the BMW i3 will be confirmed in October.
