Bolotana Emerges as a Rare Female Longevity Hotspot on Sardinia

The mountain village of Bolotana in Sardinia’s Nuoro province is home to an extraordinary concentration of centenarians, where roughly one in seven 70-year-old women reaches the age of 100. Researchers from the University of Illinois Chicago documented that remaining life expectancy for 70-year-olds between 2021 and 2025 reached 16 years for men and nearly 21 years for women.

How Bolotana Compares to Global Centenarian Rates

The probability of 70-year-old women reaching a century of life in Bolotana stands at 13.8 percent, compared to 4.9 percent for men in the same village. By contrast, federal statistical data shows that only 5.1 percent of 70-year-old women reach 100 in Germany, 3.5 percent in Italy as a whole, and 3.6 percent in the United States. Study co-author S. Jay Olshansky notes that this makes the village’s female demographic likely the longest-living female population in the world, or close to it.

Historical Parish Records Verify Extreme Ages

Researchers relied on unusually extensive historical documentation in Bolotana, utilizing municipal registers and centuries-old baptismal books to independently verify birth and death dates. This detailed paper trail successfully addresses common skepticism surrounding extreme age claims in longevity research. The research team confirmed 38 individuals who reached 100 years among the birth cohorts spanning from 1900 to 1925.

Lifestyle Factors and Local Geography Shape Daily Life

While the study does not definitively isolate the exact drivers of this longevity, researchers point to a combination of genetics, local diet, daily physical activity, and strong family structures. Residents walk steep streets and hills, while most food is grown locally, including olive oil rich in healthy fats. Close-knit family networks also ensure that social isolation remains rare among older residents.

Bolotana Female Longevity Differs from Other Regional Hotspots

While other regional hotspots like the Barbagia pastoral area are known primarily for exceptional male longevity, Bolotana’s phenomenon concentrates heavily among women.
