Bondi Beach Hero: “I Wanted to Protect Innocent People”

Ahmed al Ahmed, the hero of the Bondi Beach shooting, described running towards one of the attackers and disarming him, stating he acted to protect “innocent people.”

Sajid and Naveed Akram, father and son, are accused of targeting a Hanukkah event on Sydney’s Bondi Beach on December 14th, resulting in the deaths of 15 people and injuries to dozens. Authorities have classified the incident as an antisemitic terrorist attack.

Amidst the tragedy, stories of bravery emerged from those who attempted to stop the gunmen during the attack.

Ahmed al Ahmed, a local fruit seller, gained recognition for his valiant actions – dodging between parked cars during the shooting and then successfully wresting a gun from one of the assailants.

“My target was just to take the gun from him, and to stop him from killing a human being’s life and not killing innocent people,” he explained to CBS News.

“I know I saved lots, but I feel sorry for the lost.”

Mr. Ahmed sustained multiple gunshot wounds to the shoulder during the struggle and required several surgeries.

He recounted jumping on the gunman’s back, securing him with his right hand, and demanding, “Drop your gun, stop doing what you’re doing.”

“I don’t want to see people killed in front of me,I don’t want to see blood,I don’t want to hear his gun,I don’t want to see people screaming and begging, asking for help,” Mr. Ahmed told the television network.

Mr. Ahmed was enjoying a coffee at the beach when the shooting began.

According to his uncle Mohammed, a farmer, Mr. Ahmed emigrated to Australia from Syria in 2007. Speaking from Ahmed’s hometown of Al-Nayrab days after the shooting, mohammed said, “His act is a source of pride for us and for syria.”

The Australian government has expedited visa processing and granted visas to Ahmed.
