LAS VEGAS, NV — The Nonprofit United Way of Southern Nevada (UWSN) has launched a community book drive this Wednesday, February 11, in anticipation of the Nevada Reading Week. This state initiative, scheduled from March 2 to 6, aims to inspire and encourage the habit of reading throughout the region.
The main purpose of the collection is to strengthen the program United Readers from UWSN, which connects elementary students (grades K–5) with qualified mentors to improve their literacy and reading comprehension skills. According to the organization, the books collected will allow participating schools to develop and enrich their school libraries.
The impact of the program is statistically significant. Information provided by UWSN indicates that 90% of students participating in United Readers have demonstrated tangible improvement in their academic results. This intervention model is based on 30-minute sessions, twice a week, which establishes a solid foundation for the student’s educational growth.
Citizens who wish to support this cause can donate used books in good condition. The organization requests that the texts be suitable for children (textbooks, encyclopedias, religious materials or romantic novels for adults are excluded) and that they do not present structural damage, such as missing pages or undone bindings.
