How Long Can Borisov and Peevski Hold On?

The central question in Bulgarian politics today is how long boyko Borisov and Delyan Peevski can maintain their power. Will they continue to disregard protesters, or will one of them yield, leading to the government’s fall in the next vote of no confidence?

The duo appears determined to preserve the status quo. They control the cabinet, have appointed allies to key ministries, and filled parliamentary-determined government posts with their own selections. While the state budget presented challenges, they currently retain power.

However, the ongoing protests pose a significant problem for Borisov and Peevski.

The sheer number of protesters demands attention. Borisov responded by focusing on buisness concerns, promising to revise the budget to address employer complaints. He believes addressing budgetary concerns will quell the protests.

This move also reflects Borisov’s desire to downplay the political nature of the demonstrations. Protesters directly target Borisov and Peevski, demanding their removal from political life.

Delyan peevski views the protests as an existential threat, even framing them as a “People’s Court.” Borisov, conversely, denies any political motivation, suggesting conspiracies – blaming business interests or claiming young people were misled regarding eurozone membership.

This dismissal infuriates citizens and fuels further demonstrations.

The protests, particularly the large turnout on December 2nd, demonstrate a refusal to accept the duo’s denial of citizens’ right to political expression and to pressure the government.

Borisov’s conspiracy theories allow him to justify clinging to power, framing the protests as a plot to overthrow him rather than a legitimate expression of public discontent. This attitude further enrages the public.

The conflict now shifts to the parliamentary arena with the vote of no confidence submitted by PP-DB. Currently, the tandem maintains a strong position in the National Assembly. There is no indication of their majority fracturing; no parties are withdrawing support, and no MPs are defecting. Instead, they are consolidating their ranks to preserve the current situation.
