Boston Celebrates Lunar Recent Year with Festivities and the Year of the Horse

Boston is embracing the Lunar New Year, marking the beginning of the Year of the Horse with a series of cultural events and celebrations throughout the city. Festivities kicked off on February 15th and will continue through early March, culminating in the annual Lunar New Year Lion Dance Parade on March 1st.

Flower Market Ushers in the New Year

A pop-up flower market at the China Trade Center, open from February 11th to 16th, provided residents with traditional decorations, plants, and gifts to celebrate the Lunar New Year. The market featured fresh flowers, red envelopes, and other items symbolizing good fortune for the year ahead. The Boston Herald reported on the market’s popularity with local shoppers.

Preserving Tradition and Cultural Identity

Debbie Ho, executive director of Chinatown Main Street, emphasized the importance of these events in preserving cultural heritage for future generations. “Keeping the tradition and the culture for years to come for our children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren,” she said, highlighting the desire to maintain a strong sense of identity within the community.

Community Celebrations and Cultural Experiences

The Lunar New Year celebrations extend beyond the flower market. The Museum of Fine Arts will host a special evening on February 19th, offering pay-what-you-wish ($5 minimum) access to explore Chinese, Korean, and Vietnamese art, along with workshops, demonstrations, and performances. Copley Place will also host a celebration on February 21st, featuring a traditional lion dance performance by the Wah Lum Kung Fu and Tai Chi Academy.

Lion Dance Parade to Conclude Celebrations

The festivities will culminate with the Lunar New Year Lion Dance Parade on March 1st, starting at Phillips Square at 10:00 AM. Meet Boston and Boston Discovery Guide confirm the parade route winds through the streets of Chinatown, offering opportunities to witness traditional Lion Dances and enjoy the vibrant atmosphere. The Boston Discovery Guide notes the parade typically finishes around 3:00 PM.
