Boxer SWaTrInf: Germany’s New Wheeled Fire Support Vehicle
The German Army is set to receive a significant boost in mobility and firepower with the introduction of the Boxer SWaTrInf (Schwerer Waffenträger Infanterie), the most modern variant of the Boxer wheeled combat vehicle. Equipped with a 30mm automatic cannon and Spike-LR II anti-tank guided missiles, this vehicle is poised to become a key asset for the Bundeswehr.
A Light Tank for Tier VII
The Boxer SWaTrInf will join the German ground forces tree in the first major update of 2026 for War Thunder, operating at Tier VII.1 It offers a versatile combination of firepower, protection, and speed.
Key Features
- 30mm Automatic Cannon: Features automatic target tracking and utilizes various ammunition types, including a proximity-fused shrapnel round (AHEAD) effective against aerial targets and an armor-piercing fin-stabilized discarding sabot (APFSDS) round.
- Spike-LR II ATGM: Employs a “fire-and-forget” system, capable of engaging armored vehicles from above and slow-moving helicopters.
- Advanced Electronics: Includes a panoramic viewfinder for the commander, a stabilized fire control system, a laser rangefinder, and thermal cameras for both the commander, and gunner.
- Laser Warning System: Equipped with laser warning receivers around the turret.
- High Mobility: Capable of exceeding 100 km/h on paved roads.
- Bulletproof Armor: Provides protection against small-caliber autocannon shells and up to 14.5mm machine gun fire.
Vehicle History and International Cooperation
The Boxer SWaTrInf is designed to replace the Wiesel 1 and 2 tankettes within the Bundeswehr.1 A unique aspect of this program is the international collaboration with Australia. The German variant is based on the Australian Boxer Combat Reconnaissance Vehicle (CRV) platform.
Production takes place at Rheinmetall’s facility in Redbank, Queensland, Australia, as part of a significant defense export project formalized through an intergovernmental agreement between Germany and Australia.1 The first prototype was delivered to the Bundeswehr in May 2024, with a contract for 123 vehicles to be delivered by 2030.
Strategic Role on the Battlefield
The Boxer SWaTrInf is expected to excel as a support vehicle for tanks, providing cover against armored vehicles and low-flying aircraft. Its mobility also allows it to operate independently, functioning as a point capture vehicle or an ambush platform for its ATGM capabilities. However, its size requires careful consideration when attempting to conceal or avoid detection.
Availability in War Thunder
Players will be able to experience the Boxer SWaTrInf in War Thunder with the release of the first major update of 2026.23
Please note that vehicle characteristics may be subject to change before integration into the game.
