Brad Haddin Returns as NSW Blues Head Coach Amidst Assistant Coach Departures

Brad Haddin has been appointed as the fresh head coach of New South Wales cricket, returning to the role in June, as the state seeks to regain its prominence in the Sheffield Shield. The appointment comes as two assistant coaches, Ali de Winter and Shawn Bradstreet, were informed of their departures, a decision met with criticism from former NSW and Australian spinner Steve O’Keefe.

Haddin’s Return and Vision for NSW Cricket

Haddin, who represented NSW for 12 years, expressed his pride in rejoining the team. “NSW cricket has been an integral part of my life and to rejoin the fold as Blues head coach is a proud moment for myself and my family,” Haddin stated. Fox Sports reported on his statement. He aims to restore a strong identity to NSW cricket, stating his desire to create a team with a “formidable, distinctive style of play.”

Cricket NSW CEO Lee Germon highlighted Haddin’s experience and understanding of the state’s cricketing culture. “Brad is a highly regarded coach with experience at international and franchise level, plus a deep understanding of the NSW way of playing,” Germon said. Fox Sports as well quoted Germon’s remarks on Haddin’s leadership qualities as a player and coach.

Assistant Coach Departures Spark Controversy

The decision to remove assistant coaches Ali de Winter and Shawn Bradstreet has drawn criticism. Steve O’Keefe voiced his disappointment on SEN, describing the manner of their dismissal as “brutal and extremely disappointing.” Fox Sports detailed O’Keefe’s comments, emphasizing the coaches’ long-standing service to Cricket NSW.

Recent NSW Performance and Context

NSW finished fifth in the Sheffield Shield after a final-round draw against Western Australia, who ended nine wickets down on Tuesday. ESPNcricinfo reported on the drawn match. The state has not won the Sheffield Shield since the 2019-2020 season, a period interrupted by COVID-19, and there have been concerns about talent development within the state.

Haddin will not be taking on the vacant head coaching roles for either the Sydney Sixers or Sydney Thunder in the Huge Bash League (BBL). Former Sixers coach Greg Shipperd was also relieved of his duties, while Trevor Bayliss departed Thunder after a challenging season.
