Braskem has met more than two-thirds of its target to cut absolute greenhouse gas emissions by 15% across its operations by 2030. According to company disclosures released on September 17, 2026, the milestone stems from an ongoing Industrial Decarbonization Program that has already eliminated more than 1.2 million tons of CO₂ equivalent per year.
Industrial Decarbonization Program Strategy and Governance
Established in 2021, the Industrial Decarbonization Program relies on two primary pillars. The framework focuses on strengthening climate governance, management culture, and internal processes while executing targeted initiatives in continuous improvement, energy efficiency, electrification, and energy matrix transformation. Gustavo Checcucci, Industrial Energy and Decarbonization Director at Braskem, noted that emissions reduction functions as a current operational strategy rather than a distant goal. The program integrates internal carbon pricing mechanisms to guide investment choices and prioritize projects that generate concurrent environmental and economic returns.
Asset Reconfiguration and Facility Upgrades in São Paulo
Braskem has overhauled the infrastructure of several major industrial assets to support this transition. In the ABC region of São Paulo, the Vesta Project substituted traditional steam turbines with high-efficiency electric motors powered by a cogeneration plant running on hydrogen-rich residual gas. That upgrade reduced carbon emissions by approximately 100,000 tons annually while increasing energy efficiency by 7.3% and cutting facility water consumption by 11%. The company also announced plans for its Paulínia facility in São Paulo to install a boiler driven by renewable electricity by 2027, cutting local CO₂ emissions by roughly 65% by replacing fossil fuel steam generation.

Biomethane and Biomass Integration Across Regional Plants
Operations outside São Paulo have similarly transitioned away from conventional fossil fuels. At the Triunfo Petrochemical Complex in Rio Grande do Sul, Braskem integrated biomethane supplied by Ultragaz to partially substitute natural gas. The fuel originates from organic waste at the Minas do Leão landfill and provides a blueprint for deployment at other industrial sites. Meanwhile, at the PVC plant in Marechal Deodoro, Alagoas, the facility completely replaced fossil natural gas with eucalyptus biomass for steam production. That site also upgraded to an electric motor exceeding 90% efficiency to replace a 20% efficient turbine, driving down local greenhouse gas emissions by roughly 150,000 tons annually—a 30% reduction compared to 2020 state levels.
