Braves’ 2026 Lineup Takes Shape with Acuña Jr. Leading the Way
NORTH PORT, Fla. – As Spring Training progresses, the Atlanta Braves’ 2026 lineup is beginning to materialize, with Ronald Acuña Jr. Firmly established as the leadoff hitter. Manager Walt Weiss confirmed Acuña’s position, a role the star outfielder expressed his enthusiasm for.
Acuña Jr. Confirmed as Leadoff Hitter
Weiss initially hinted at Acuña leading off in December and reiterated the decision before Sunday’s game against the Minnesota Twins. “I won’t say [the decision] was easy, because you can create a case for [Acuña to hit] one, two or three,” Weiss stated. “I wanted to make sure I had a conversation with him, too. That’s part of the equation. What does he really seek to do? And he loves leading off. And I love that he sets the tone right out of the gate.”
Acuña’s performance in the leadoff spot in 2023, where he posted a .1012 OPS, was the fourth-highest mark among players with at least 500 plate appearances in the leadoff position. MLB.com
Potential Lineup Construction
While Acuña’s position is set, the rest of the lineup is still under evaluation. Weiss indicated he is open to different configurations, particularly considering matchups against right-handed and left-handed pitchers.
Sunday’s lineup, which Weiss suggested could resemble the Opening Day order, featured:
- Ronald Acuña Jr. (R)
- Drake Baldwin (L)
- Matt Olson (L)
- Jurickson Profar (S)
- Austin Riley (R)
- Ozzie Albies (S)
- Michael Harris II (L)
- Aaron Schunk (R)
- Mauricio Dubón (R)
Competition for Remaining Spots
Eli White or Mike Yastrzemski are likely candidates to replace Aaron Schunk, who is expected to begin the season with Triple-A Gwinnett. MLB.com Yastrzemski is expected to see playing time in left field and at designated hitter. SI.com
Weiss also expressed interest in evaluating the potential of having Baldwin and Olson bat back-to-back, particularly against left-handed relievers. He also noted the possibility of Michael Harris II batting ninth to create a second leadoff hitter.
