SAO PAULO, Feb. 12 (Xinhua) — Brazil‘s Minister of Mines and Energy, Alexandre Silveira, highlighted on Wednesday the Chinese technological model in the development of the battery market and power generation linked to electromobility.
By participating in the CEO Conference Brazil 2026, organized by the BTG Pactual bank in Sao Paulo, Silveira announced that the Government plans to hold the first auction next June to incorporate large-scale batteries into the Brazilian electricity system.
The minister maintained that the battery market will be “the large market of the Brazilian electricity sector”, based on the extensive renewable generation capacity installed in the country.
He explained that the Government seeks to establish associations with large international players in the sector, such as China, to strengthen the local production chain and promote technology transfer.
“I was in China for several days discussing it. I was with CATL, with Huawei (…) to see what local content we can contribute to this first auction. If it is possible to do so,” he said, adding that Brazil cannot limit itself to importing technology without developing its own capabilities.
“Because we cannot continue to be, in our vision, just recipients of intelligence, of materials and not absorb science, technology, bring a little of production,” he stated.
Silveira indicated that the battery auction, initially scheduled for April, was postponed because the Government has not yet disclosed the final guidelines for the process, which delays stages such as the preparation of the specifications, although he emphasized that the intention is to complete it in June.
“We very much believe that we are going to be able to place in that auction, even modestly, a portion of local content, so that we can, at a minimum, begin a national intelligence process,” he declared.
According to the minister, the strategy also includes sending Brazilian technicians to China to specialize in the battery and energy storage sector, with the aim of later returning to the country to apply the knowledge acquired in national companies.
