Portland Man Dies in Skiing Accident at Mt. Bachelor

BEND, Ore. — A 65-year-old man from Portland, Oregon, died Monday afternoon after a skiing accident on Mt. Bachelor, according to the Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office. The incident occurred on the Wanoga Way Ski Trail, an intermediate run on the east side of the mountain.

Details of the Incident

Mt. Bachelor Ski Patrol was alerted to an injured skier at approximately 2:20 p.m. On March 10, 2026 . Responding to the scene were Deschutes County Sheriff’s deputies, Bend Fire &amp. Rescue, and Airlink.

The skier, identified as Nigel Barry Young, was found without a pulse and not breathing by ski patrol. Despite extensive resuscitation efforts by both ski patrol and Bend Fire & Rescue medics, Young was pronounced dead shortly before 3:00 p.m. .

Circumstances of the Accident

Investigators reported that Young had been skiing with three friends who were ahead of him on the trail and did not witness the crash. He was wearing a helmet at the time of the incident, but authorities believe his injuries were not survivable .

Investigation Ongoing

The Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office is coordinating with Mt. Bachelor staff to investigate the circumstances surrounding Young’s death . The Wanoga Way Ski Trail is accessible from the Cloudchaser Lift.
