Breast Cancer Cases Expected to Surge by 2050, Widening Global Disparities

Continuing efforts are being made to reduce deaths resulting from breast cancer, a widespread disease across the globe. According to recent studies, breast cancer accounts for nearly one in four cancer cases diagnosed in women worldwide, and this number is projected to increase significantly by 2050. Simultaneously, the countries least equipped to manage this disease are lagging furthest behind in addressing the crisis.

Researchers published a study in The Lancet Oncology analyzing breast cancer trends in 204 countries over three decades. The analysis indicates a substantial rise in cases, with annual diagnoses expected to climb from 2.3 million in 2023 to over 3.5 million by 2050. Deaths are projected to increase by 44%, from 764,000 to approximately 1.4 million during the same period.

“Mortality rates have improved over time in higher-income countries, but progress has been uneven, with deaths increasing in some lower-income countries,” stated Dr. Lisa Force, an assistant professor at the University of Washington’s Institute for Health Evaluation.

The study revealed that low-income countries often diagnose cases exceeding their medical infrastructure’s capacity. Effective breast cancer care requires a coordinated system encompassing surgery, radiotherapy, and systemic therapy – resources severely limited in many developing nations. As of 2020, only about half of African countries had access to external beam radiotherapy, a standard treatment for breast cancer. When available, capacity often falls short of patient needs. Without radiotherapy, surgical mastectomy becomes the primary option, and surgery alone, without additional therapy, leads to poorer outcomes.

The cost of systemic treatments further complicates the issue, as targeted therapies for certain breast cancer types remain unaffordable for most patients in low-income countries, even those correctly diagnosed.

The study suggests that more than a quarter of healthy years lost globally due to breast cancer are linked to six modifiable factors: excessive red meat consumption, smoking, high blood sugar, obesity, alcohol consumption, and insufficient physical activity. Addressing these factors can reduce risks, but does not eliminate them entirely, as many cases occur regardless of lifestyle.

Regular screening remains the most reliable method for early detection. Experts recommend mammogram screening starting at age 40, repeated every two years until age 74. Women with a family history of the disease or other high-risk factors should discuss a personalized screening schedule with their doctor. Any fresh lump or changes in skin texture, nipple shape, or breast shape warrant prompt medical evaluation.

Research indicates that early detection improves survival rates more than any other factor studied, regardless of income level. A mammogram at age 40 is often less expensive than the treatments required for late-stage disease. Countries that have successfully reduced mortality gaps share a key advantage: early disease detection.

Egyptian Women’s Initiative

In Egypt, the Ministry of Health and Population launched the Egyptian Women’s Initiative, aiming to detect early breast tumors. Since its launch in 2019, the Ministry has provided screening and awareness services to over 66 million women. Early detection reduces the burden on both patients and the healthcare system, enabling effective responses to free treatment protocols aligned with international standards.

The initiative follows the latest international protocols for treating breast cancer in 14 Ministry of Health centers and 14 university centers, free of charge, whereas also equipping these centers for applied research to advance oncology treatment.
