Matthew Brennan Steps Up as Visma-Lease a Bike Leader at Omloop Het Nieuwsblad Amid Van Aert’s Illness

Matthew Brennan, the 20-year-old British cyclist, will lead Visma-Lease a Bike at the Omloop Het Nieuwsblad on Saturday, February 28, 2026, after Wout van Aert was sidelined due to illness. This unexpected shift in team leadership comes just one year after Brennan’s surprise participation in the same race as part of the team’s development squad.

From Development Rider to Team Leader

Brennan reflected on the change, stating that the progression to a leadership role is a natural development. “It [leading in Omloop] is just how the years develop, I don’t consider it points to anything. This year we have really good aims, a strong team,” he said. He emphasized his willingness to support his teammates, adding, “If I can be there to benefit any of the other guys, that’d also be a good race for me.”

The team’s initial plan involved Van Aert taking the lead, with Brennan and Christophe Laporte providing support. However, Van Aert’s illness has thrust Brennan into the spotlight, requiring him to handle increased media attention and team leadership responsibilities.

A Breakthrough 2025 Season

Brennan enjoyed a remarkable 2025 season, securing 14 victories, including stage wins in prestigious races like Volta a Catalunya, Tour de Pologne, and Tour de Romandie [Team Visma-Lease a Bike]. His success led to a contract extension with the team through 2029.

Omloop Het Nieuwsblad Challenge

Despite his recent success, Brennan acknowledges the challenge of competing against experienced one-day racers like his teammate Wout van Aert (before his illness), Tom Pidcock of Pinarello-Q36.5, and Jasper Philipsen of Alpecin-Premier Tech [The Times]. He believes a reduced group of racers at the finish would be the ideal scenario for him.

Brennan highlighted his positive training data from the Tour Down Under, where he won a stage, as a source of confidence. “Maybe I didn’t quite show it then, but it gave me some confidence going into these races now.” He also noted that a hard race could lead to a different outcome, even against stronger competitors.

Team Dynamics and Van Aert’s Absence

Brennan recognized Van Aert’s absence as a “massive loss” but expressed confidence in the team’s ability to support those vying for victory. “But I also think I have a really strong team that can also support whoever can be fighting for the wins. We want to be aggressive and do the best we can to put our options as far and as deep into the race as possible.”

Grischa Niermann will also be a key figure in supporting Brennan at the race. Niermann affirmed Brennan’s position as the team’s best option [Domestique Cycling].

Looking Ahead

This season represents a significant step up for Brennan, with his first-time participation in major Classics like Milan-San Remo and the Tour of Flanders, a return to Paris-Roubaix, and his debut in a Grand Tour at the Vuelta a España. His performance at the Omloop Het Nieuwsblad will be a crucial test as he establishes himself as a key rider for Visma-Lease a Bike.
