Quinn Priester’s Thoracic Outlet Syndrome Diagnosis Delays Brewers’ Opening Day Debut
Milwaukee Brewers right-hander Quinn Priester will begin the 2026 season on the injured list due to discomfort in his right wrist, which has been diagnosed as thoracic outlet syndrome (T.O.S.). The diagnosis was confirmed by Brewers manager Pat Murphy on March 12, 2026, after Priester consulted with a specialist.
Understanding Thoracic Outlet Syndrome
Thoracic outlet syndrome occurs when the nerves and blood vessels in the space between your collarbone and your first rib are compressed. According to MLB.com, this compression can lead to pain, weakness, fatigue, numbness, or tingling in the arm and hand. Philadelphia Phillies pitcher Zack Wheeler underwent decompression surgery for T.O.S. Last September to address a blood clot near his shoulder and remove his first rib.
Priester’s Condition and Treatment Plan
Priester initially experienced wrist discomfort in August of the previous season and managed it through the remainder of the year and into the offseason. The Brewers are optimistic that Priester’s condition can be treated without surgery. He threw lightly off a mound on March 13, 2026, with a more intense bullpen session scheduled for March 21.
“Often, thoracic outlet requires surgery. But in this case, we’re not there,” Murphy told reporters. “We’re feeling like there’s a chance that he’s going to come through this.”
Impact on the Brewers’ Rotation
With Opening Day scheduled for March 26 at American Family Field, Priester will miss the start of the season. The Brewers acquired Priester from the Boston Red Sox during the previous season, where he quickly became a valuable asset, finishing second on the team in wins with 13 and posting a 3.32 ERA.
