Britain is sharpening its Arctic strategy and will increase the number of soldiers in Norway from 1,000 to 2,000 over the next three years.
In addition, British military forces will play a central role in NATO’s Arctic Sentry force. Military planning is underway, the British Ministry of Defense states in a press release.
The official announcement of the force increase in Norway will take place when the British Defense Minister John Healey visits British soldiers at Camp Viking in northern Norway on Wednesday.
– Great Britain is stepping up the protection of the Arctic and the northern regions by doubling the number of soldiers we have in Norway, and increasing joint exercises with NATO allies, he says in the press release.
Healey also states that Russia poses the greatest threat to the Arctic and northern regions seen since the Cold War.
– We see that Putin is rapidly re-establishing a military presence in the region, including reopening old bases from the Cold War, he says.
