British Airways Flight BA2995 Diverts to London After Emergency Descent Over Irish Sea

A British Airways flight traveling from London Heathrow to Chicago O’Hare suffered an in-flight technical issue on Monday, October 5, forcing the aircraft to make an emergency descent of more than 8,000 meters before returning to its origin airport, europe1.fr reported. Flight BA2995 experienced sudden turbulence and dropped over the Irish Sea within a one-hour window after takeoff, according to accounts published by The Guardian.

During the rapid altitude loss, which reached approximately 28,000 feet, oxygen masks dropped down in the cabin as the plane signaled a general emergency code. The descent lasted for seven minutes before the flight crew successfully stabilized the Boeing 777-200ER. Passenger Tom Nicholls described the experience to the British newspaper The Mirror, stating that the aircraft adjusted its trajectory without feeling like an uncontrolled plunge and praising the flight deck crew for performing a very good job.

Following the stabilization of the aircraft, the flight crew executed a turnabout and landed safely back at London Heathrow Airport approximately five hours after departure. The involved aircraft is a Boeing 777-200ER delivered in July 1997, making the jet nearly 30 years old and one of the older operational airframes in the British Airways fleet. Airline representatives maintained a reserved stance regarding the exact nature of the mechanical malfunction, confirming only that a technical issue prompted the return.

A British Airways spokesperson emphasized that customer and crew safety remains the primary institutional priority, noting that skilled pilots brought the aircraft down safely at Heathrow. Affected passengers deplaned normally upon arrival, and airline customer teams arranged alternative travel itineraries. Passenger Tom Nicholls confirmed to The Mirror that he was successfully rebooked onto a replacement flight scheduled for the following day.
