Jeffrey Archer Dies at 86
Best-selling author and former British politician Jeffrey Archer has died at the age of 86, publisher HarperCollins announced.
Kate Elton, managing director for HarperCollins in the United Kingdom and Archer’s editor, stated that they are heartbroken over losing an author who entertained generations of readers and a true friend. Archer’s final novel, Adam and Eve, is scheduled for publication this month.
Political Rise and Fall
Alongside his literary career, Archer was a prominent politician for the Conservative Party. He served in the House of Commons from 1969 to 1974 and later held a central role in the party under Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher during the mid-1980s.
His political career concluded following a public scandal. In 2001, Archer was convicted of perjury and perverting the course of justice in connection with a highly publicized libel trial. He received a four-year prison sentence, serving two years before his release.
