Bronx Week Returns After Temporary Pause

After a brief pause due to economic concerns, Bronx Week will proceed this year, Borough President Vanessa Gibson announced on March 16, 2026. The annual celebration, a tradition for nearly 55 years, was temporarily suspended on March 4, 2026, as Gibson’s office adjusted its focus in response to the city’s budget deficit and broader fiscal issues [1].

A Community Effort

Gibson initially announced the resumption of Bronx Week at the end of Bronx Day in Albany, receiving enthusiastic support from elected officials, business leaders, and nonprofit organizations [1]. Her office stated that it received overwhelming support from community leaders and stakeholders who stepped up to help relaunch the tradition.

“The Bronx has always been a borough defined by resilience, strength, and community,” Gibson said. “Time and time again, Bronxites rise to the moment, supporting one another, and we are excited to celebrate together once again. When we say the Bronx leads, it means we lead together in partnership and on purpose.” [1]

Council member Althea Stevens expressed gratitude for Gibson’s leadership in securing support for the event, even as Council member Justin Sanchez called on Bronx partners to help ensure its success [1]. Sanchez stated, “Every corner of our community came together to build this happen, and with their continued enthusiasm, support, and guidance, we will have the best celebration of our borough yet.” [1]

What is Bronx Week?

Bronx Week is typically held in May and includes a week-long celebration of Bronx businesses, culture, and community organizations [1]. The event is organized by the Bronx Borough President’s Office in partnership with the Bronx Tourism Council and the Bronx Economic Development Corporation, and is supported by outside sponsorships.

Previous Cancellation and Economic Concerns

The cancellation of Bronx Week in May 2026 marked the first time the event had been canceled since the pandemic in 2020 [3]. Gibson cited economic hardship as the primary reason for the initial pause, emphasizing the need to ensure that public funds were used effectively during a period of economic crisis [4].

Looking Ahead

Details regarding the specific date and programming for the resumed Bronx Week are still being finalized by the borough president’s office [1]. However, some programming, such as “The BX Factor,” “Bronx Bankers Breakfast,” “Salute to America Firework Show,” and “Bronx Night Market,” will still take place this year [3].
