Brook Lopez Continues Stellar NBA Career with Los Angeles Clippers

LOS ANGELES — At 37 years old, Brook Lopez is still a valuable contributor in the National Basketball Association. After playing his 1,162nd career game, the Los Angeles Clippers center reflected on his longevity and adaptability in a recent interview. Lopez, currently in his 18th NBA season, embraces whatever role the Clippers require as the team demonstrates improved performance.

Adapting to a Changing Role

“I’m ready for whatever my team needs me to do,” Lopez told Andscape. “That has always been my way through the course of my career. And obviously, the same applies here. I’ve been putting the same work in regardless of my role. So, I knew I’d be prepared, obviously. I knew I’d be ready, prepared when whatever time came. … I signed up to win, so I’m cool. Whatever it takes. I’m happy to be playing, starting, helping my team win.”

A Long and Decorated Career

Drafted 10th overall by the New Jersey Nets (now the Brooklyn Nets) in 2008 out of Stanford, Lopez has consistently maintained a high level of play. He is a 2013 NBA All-Star and was twice voted to the NBA All-Defensive Team while with the Milwaukee Bucks. Brook Lopez won an NBA championship with the Bucks in 2021. Throughout his career, he has averaged 15.4 points, 5.9 rebounds, and 1.8 blocks per game. He also won the NBA Cup in 2024.

Recent Trades and Team Dynamics

Lopez’s role with the Clippers expanded following the trades of James Harden to Cleveland and Ivica Zubac to Indiana. He acknowledged the impact of losing key starters but expressed confidence in the team’s ability to continue improving. “It was tough, obviously, due to the fact that they brought so much to the team and so much of our success hinged on them,” Lopez said. “I don’t think internally we see our expectations as that different. We’re very confident. We definitely, a while ago, turned a corner and we know we can play with anyone.”

Despite his age, Lopez is managing the physical demands of increased playing time with the aid of the Clippers’ training staff. He credits a strong work ethic and positive role models, including his mother, for his longevity. Lopez has nine Clippers teammates under the age of 25, creating a dynamic between veteran leadership and youthful energy.

When asked about how much longer he plans to play, Lopez stated, “I always had a number of 20 years. A lot of great players played 20 years [whom] I looked up to. Timmy [Duncan], Kobe [Bryant]. I think Ticket [Kevin Garnett] got there. That’s always been a goal of mine, but I feel great. So now that we’re as far along as we are, I don’t really want to set a cap on it. Just see how long we can keep going until we fall.”

Family and Passions Beyond Basketball

Lopez also discussed his twin brother, Robin, who recently retired from the NBA and is pursuing a career in animation. He highlighted his brother’s long-held passion for creating an anime TV series. Outside of basketball, Lopez is a devoted Disney fan and enjoys visiting Disneyland, a park he frequented growing up in Southern California. He noted the unique history and charm of the original Disneyland park.
