Though, the treaty’s success hinges on its widespread ratification and effective implementation. As of today,over 60 countries have signed the treaty,and it requires ratification from at least 60 nations to fully come into force.
Experts emphasize that the treaty is not a silver bullet, but a critical first step.”This treaty is a framework, and the real work begins now,” said Liz Karan, a senior advisor at the Pew Charitable Trusts’ ocean conservation program. “We need countries to quickly ratify the treaty and then work together to establish a network of effective mpas and ensure the sustainable management of ocean resources.”

Shooting at Brown University Leaves two Dead, Several Injured
Two people have been killed, eight are in critical but stable condition and one suffered a non-life-threatening injury after a shooting at Brown University in Providence, R.I., on Saturday afternoon, officials said. the suspect remains at large.
Authorities are searching for a suspect described as “a male dressed in black,” Deputy Police Chief Timothy O’Hara said during an evening press conference.
A shelter-in-place order remains active for the university and surrounding areas.

The fight to save Hawaii’s coral reefs is getting a high-tech boost

A team of scientists and engineers in Hawaii are using a novel approach to try and save the state’s rapidly declining coral reefs: 3D-printed structures designed to help corals rebuild.
Coral reefs are vital ecosystems,providing habitat for a quarter of all marine life and protecting coastlines from erosion. But they are under immense stress from climate change, pollution and other factors. Rising ocean temperatures cause coral bleaching, a phenomenon where corals expel the algae living in their tissues, turning white and becoming more susceptible to disease and death.
Hawaii has lost an estimated 80% of its coral reefs over the past century, and the rate of decline is accelerating.
“We’re in a crisis situation,” says Ruth Gates, a marine biologist at the Hawaii institute of Marine Biology, who pioneered much of the work. (Gates passed away in 2018, but her research continues through her colleagues.) “We need to be proactive and find ways to help corals adapt and rebuild.”
That’s where the 3D-printed structures come in. Researchers are creating complex, porous ceramic structures that mimic the natural environment of a coral reef. These structures provide a stable base for coral larvae to settle and grow, and they also offer shelter from predators and strong currents.
“Think of it like building an apartment complex for corals,” explains Manuel Fuentes, a postdoctoral researcher at the Hawaii Institute of Marine Biology. “We’re providing them with a safe and supportive environment to thrive.”
The team uses a specialized 3D printer to create the structures,layering ceramic material to create intricate designs. The ceramic is made from a mixture of calcium carbonate,the same material that makes up coral skeletons,and other minerals. This makes the structures biocompatible with corals, meaning they won’t harm the animals.
the structures are then deployed in areas where coral reefs have been damaged or degraded. Researchers carefully monitor the structures to track coral growth and assess their effectiveness.
Early results are promising. Corals that have settled on the 3D-printed structures are growing faster and are more resilient to bleaching than corals in nearby natural reefs.
“We’re seeing a significant increase in coral cover in areas where we’ve deployed the structures,” says Emily Peavey, a marine biologist at the Hawaii Institute of Marine Biology. “It’s a really encouraging sign.”
The project is not without its challenges. the 3D-printed structures are relatively expensive to produce, and they require careful maintenance to prevent them from becoming overgrown with algae or other organisms.
But researchers are working to address these challenges. They are exploring ways to reduce the cost of production and are developing new materials that are more resistant to fouling.
The team hopes that this technology can be scaled up to help restore coral reefs around the world. They are collaborating with researchers in other countries to adapt the technology to different reef environments.
