Bruins Rally to Defeat Sabres in Overtime
Buffalo, NY – The Boston Bruins secured a 4-3 overtime victory against the Buffalo Sabres on Wednesday night at KeyBank Center, fueled by a game-winning goal from Pavel Zacha just 38 seconds into the extra period. The win strengthens Boston’s position in the Eastern Conference playoff race.
Zacha’s Decisive Goal
The overtime winner came off a play initiated by David Pastrnak, who carried the puck into the zone and delivered a crucial pass to Zacha. Zacha then fired a shot from the left circle that eluded Buffalo goaltender Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen.
“I was just trying to retain the speed, try to swing a couple of times,” Zacha said. “Didn’t spot kind of an entrance there. Then one time I saw that can probably catch a guy and ‘Pasta’ made a great play under the stick and I just saw the goalie moving so I tried to shoot it kind of low, and it worked out.”
Pastrnak Extends Point Streak
David Pastrnak contributed a goal and two assists, extending his point streak to 11 games. He has accumulated 18 points (seven goals, 11 assists) during this impressive run. Pastrnak also reached the 90-point plateau for the fifth time in his career.
Game Recap
The Bruins (40-24-8) overcame a late deficit to secure the win. Viktor Arvidsson and Casey Mittelstadt also scored for Boston. Joonas Korpisalo made 22 saves in goal.
For the Sabres (44-20-8), Jason Zucker scored twice and Zach Benson added another goal. Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen stopped 27 shots.
Buffalo tied the game with goals from Benson and Zucker just 31 seconds apart late in the third period, but Mittelstadt answered for Boston, tying the score and setting the stage for Zacha’s overtime heroics.
Playoff Implications
Boston currently holds the first wild card spot into the Stanley Cup Playoffs from the Eastern Conference, three points ahead of the Ottawa Senators. They are tied in points with the Montreal Canadiens for third in the Atlantic Division, though Boston has played two more games. The Sabres remain tied with Carolina for the top spot in the Eastern Conference and are within 10 points of clinching their first playoff berth in 15 years.
Coach Sturm’s Assessment
Boston coach Marco Sturm praised the team’s resilience. “Just a great effort,” Sturm said. “Obviously we’re extremely happy to grab those two points. Huge, huge points, but I liked the response even better (after a 4-2 loss to the Toronto Maple Leafs on Tuesday). The guys, we were not happy, all of us.” Sturm also highlighted Pastrnak’s importance, stating, “He’s our guy…I feel like when he does it, we all feel it.”
