BTS’s ‘Arirang’ Comeback at Gwanghwamun Square: A Historic Return
After nearly four years, the global sensation BTS has returned, marking their comeback with the release of their fifth studio album, ARIRANG, and a free concert at Seoul’s Gwanghwamun Square on March 21st. This choice of venue, steeped in Korean history, is a deliberate statement about the group’s identity and origins.
A Venue Rooted in Korean History
Gwanghwamun Square, located in Jongno District, central Seoul, is one of Korea’s most historically significant sites. It is the location of statues honoring King Sejong and Admiral Yi Sun-sin . The decision to stage their comeback here underscores HYBE Chairman Bang Si-hyuk’s vision of emphasizing the group’s Korean roots.
Why Gwanghwamun?
According to Brandon Yu, President of HYBE Music Group APAC, the selection of Gwanghwamun was a critical decision reflecting BTS’s identity. “If we are focused on the identity of BTS being this band that was created and originated from Korea, which gave so much joy to the world… then this historical moment has to be in Korea and it also has to take place in the most iconic space in Korea,” Yu stated during a news conference .
Global Reach of the Comeback
The “BTS Comeback Live: Arirang” concert is expected to draw a massive crowd. Approximately 22,000 ticket holders will attend in person, while an estimated 260,000 fans are anticipated to gather in Gwanghwamun Square . The performance will be livestreamed on Netflix, reaching an expected audience of approximately 300 million viewers from 190 countries .
‘Arirang’ and the Message of Korean Identity
The album title, ‘Arirang,’ itself conveys a central message. BTS has emphasized a focus on their own identity rather than attempting to deliver a grand, overarching message. They have incorporated elements of Korean excitement and culture into their lyrics, signifying a return to their roots .
Global Response and Security Measures
The comeback has garnered significant international attention, with drone shows and electronic billboards in cities like New York and Shibuya celebrating the event . More than 200 domestic and foreign media outlets have applied for coverage . Seoul authorities have deployed approximately 6,500 police officers, including 70 riot police units, and 3,400 city personnel, along with extensive fire and rescue resources, to ensure public safety .
