Buckley and Mescal Nominated for Golden Globe Awards

Irish actors Jessie Buckley and Paul Mescal have been nominated for Golden Globe awards for the acclaimed drama Hamnet.

The Irish stars are among the acting nominees for their roles in Chloe Zhao’s film, the adaptation of Maggie O’Farrell’s book about William Shakespeare, his wife, Agnes, and their son Hamnet.

Mescal is nominated for Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role in a Motion Picture (Drama), while Buckley is among the Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture (Drama) nominees.

Mescal faces competition from Benicio Del Toro, Jacob Elordi, Sean Penn, Adam Sandler and Stellan Skarsgard, who have also been nominated for Best Performance by a Male Actor in a Supporting Role at the 2026 Golden Globe Awards.

Del Toro and Penn are nominated for their roles in One Battle After Another, Elordi for his role in Frankenstein; Sandler for Jay Kelly; and Skarsgard for sentimental Value.

Buckley will face competition from Jennifer Lawrence (Die My Love),Renate Reinsve (Sentimental Value),Julia Roberts (After The Hunt) ,Tessa Thompson (Hedda) and Eva Victor (Sorry,Baby).Director Yorgos Lanthimos’ Bugonia, produced by Dublin-based Element Pictures, picked up three nominations. It was nominated for Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy, Emma stone was nominated for Best Female Actor – Musical or Comedy and Jesse Plemons was nominated for Best Male Actor – Musical or Comedy.

Blue Moon,wich was filmed in Ireland and tells the story of composer Lorenz Hart’s struggles with alcoholism and mental health during the opening of oklahoma!,is also up for Best motion Picture – Musical or Comedy and the movie’s lead star,Ethan Hawke,is nominated for Best Male Actor – Motion Picture – Musical/Comedy.

Actresses Emily Blunt, Elle Fanning, Ariana Grande, Inga Ibsdotter lilleaas, Amy Madigan and teyana Taylor have been nominated.

The 83rd Golden Globe Awards nominations have been announced, with several productions boasting Irish connections receiving recognition.The TV series All Her Fault, based on the thriller novel by Dublin author Andrea Mara, is nominated for Best Limited Series, anthology Series or Television Motion picture. it will compete against Adolescence, The Beast in Me, Black Mirror, Dying for Sex, and The Girlfriend.

Succession star Sarah Snook has also received a nomination for Best Female Actor – Television – Limited Series, Anthology Series or Television Motion Picture for her performance in All Her Fault.

Jenna Ortega, who starred in the Netflix series Wednesday, which was filmed extensively in Ireland, is nominated for Best Performance by an Actress in a Television Series, Musical or Comedy. She is up against Kristen Bell (Nobody Wants This),Ayo Edebiri (The Bear),Selena Gomez (Only Murders in the Building),Natasha Leone (Poker Face),and Jean Smart (Hacks).

Film Nominations:

the drama film category nominees for Best Picture are Frankenstein, Hamnet, it Was Just An Accident, The Secret Agent, Sentimental Values, and Sinners.

For Best Picture in the Comedy or Musical category, the nominees are Blue Moon, Bugonia, Marty Supreme, No Other Choice, Nouvelle Vague, and One Battle After Another.

Leading actors also received nominations. Joel Edgerton (Train Dreams), Oscar Isaac (Frankenstein), Dwayne Johnson (The Smashing Machine), Michael B. Jordan (Sinners), Wagner Moura (The Secret Agent), and Jeremy Allen white (Springsteen: Deliver Me from nowhere) are nominated for Best Male Actor in a Drama Film.

The nominees for Best Male Actor in a Comedy or Musical Film are Leonardo DiCaprio (One Battle After another), Timothée Chalamet (Marty Supreme), George Clooney (Jay Kelly), Ethan Hawke (Blue Moon), Lee Byung-hun (no Other Choice), and Jesse Plemons (Bugonia).

Rounding out the acting nominations, Rose Byrne (If I Had Legs I’d Kick You), Cynthia Erivo (Wicked: For Good), Kate Hudson (Song sung Blue), Chase Infiniti (One Battle After Another), Amanda Seyfried (The Testament Of Ann Lee), and Emma Stone (Bugonia) are nominated for Best Female Actor in a Comedy or Musical Film.

The Golden Globes ceremony, hosted by comedian Nikki Glaser, will take place in Los Angeles on January 11th, where the winners will be revealed.
