Cyclone to Bring Heavy Rainfall and Temperature Drop to Bulgaria

Bulgaria is bracing for a cyclone expected to bring significant rainfall and a substantial temperature decrease towards the end of March 2026. The approaching weather system will initially bring warmer temperatures before abruptly shifting to colder conditions and potential snowfall in mountainous regions.

Weather Forecast: A Two-Phase Shift

According to forecasters at Meteo Balkans, the period between March 26th and 28th will be marked by a dynamic weather change. Before the cyclone’s arrival, Bulgaria will experience relatively warm and spring-like conditions. March 25th and 26th are expected to see temperatures above seasonal averages, accompanied by moderate to strong southerly winds and partly cloudy skies.

The change will commence on the late afternoon of March 26th, with a significant increase in cloud cover and the onset of rainfall across many areas on the night of March 27th. In the southwestern mountainous regions, precipitation will likely turn to wet snow as temperatures fall.

Intense Precipitation and Cooling Trend

The cold front associated with the cyclone will extend to Central and Eastern Bulgaria on March 27th, bringing the possibility of intense rainfall and thunderstorms. Following the cyclone’s passage, temperatures will drop considerably, falling approximately 5-6°C below the typical climatic norm for late March. This cooling poses a risk to agricultural crops and fruit trees already in bloom.

The cooling trend is expected to extend across much of the Balkans and Central Europe due to an influx of cold air. Maximum temperatures across Bulgaria after March 27th are forecast to range between 8°C and 10°C, with temperatures in mountainous areas dropping below -2°C. Meteo Balkans initially warned of the cyclone on September 30, 2025, predicting rainfall of 200-300 l/sq.m in the Varna and Burgas regions over a 48-hour period.
