Busan Enhances School Meal Safety with Livestock Product Inspections

Busan’s Nam-gu district is bolstering safety measures for livestock products used in school meals, aiming to provide students with safe and hygienic food. This initiative aligns with the ‘2026 School Lunch Livestock Product Safety Management Plan’ established by the Busan Metropolitan City government. Recent concerns regarding potential foodborne illnesses in Busan schools have prompted increased scrutiny of food safety protocols.

Monthly Inspections to Ensure Quality

The inspections will be conducted monthly throughout the school year, covering both the first semester (March to June) and the second semester (September to November). The focus will be on top companies selected by Busan Metropolitan City that supply livestock products for school meals. Each month, samples of livestock products delivered to elementary, middle, and high school cafeterias within the Nam-gu district will undergo rigorous individual identity tests.

Comprehensive Safety Measures

These inspections build upon existing efforts to ensure school meal safety in Busan. Earlier this year, all agricultural products supplied to Busan school meals passed safety inspections, including tests for pesticide residue and heavy metals. These tests covered 20 samples of produce, analyzing 480 pesticide residue items and heavy metals like lead and cadmium. The Busan Institute of Health and Environment also operates a year-round monitoring system, collaborating with eco-friendly produce meal support centers.

Commitment to Student Wellbeing

According to an official from the Nam-gu Office, “Through this inspection, we will manage to ensure that safe livestock products are supplied to school meals and strive to create a meal environment where students and parents can feel at ease.” This commitment reflects a broader effort within Busan to prioritize the health and wellbeing of students through safe and nutritious school meals.

Korea’s School Meal Standards

These efforts are supported by Korea’s School Meals Act, which mandates the provision of “high-quality food.” The Act’s Enforcement Rules specify that high-quality agricultural products must be certified as organic, pesticide-free, or Good Agricultural Practice (GAP) certified.
