Stephen McCahill,a prominent businessman,community activist,and former election candidate,has died following an assault in Ardara,County Donegal. Mr. McCahill contested the 2011 general election as an Autonomous candidate, securing 1,831 first preference votes. Gardaí (Irish police) have arrested a man in his 30s, known to Mr. McCahill,and are holding him under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act,1984.The scene of the assault has been preserved for forensic examination by the Garda Technical Bureau, and the State Pathologist has been notified. A senior investigating officer from Ballyshannon Garda station is leading the investigation.
