BuzzFeed Bets on AI with Branch Office Spin-Off Amidst Financial Concerns
BuzzFeed, the digital media company known for its quizzes and listicles, is attempting a reinvention centered around artificial intelligence. At the SXSW conference in Austin, CEO Jonah Peretti unveiled Branch Office, a new company focused on developing AI-powered consumer applications designed for creativity and connection. This move comes as BuzzFeed faces significant financial challenges, having recently reported “substantial doubt” about its ability to continue as a going concern.
Branch Office: A New Approach to AI-Driven Media
Branch Office represents BuzzFeed’s years of experimentation with AI technology, according to Peretti. The company aims to leverage AI to foster community and engagement around shared cultural interests. The initial offerings include two apps: BF Island and Conjure, alongside a social quiz app, Quiz Party.
BF Island: AI-Powered Photo Editing and Meme Culture
BF Island is a group chat platform that incorporates AI-powered photo editing tools. However, its key differentiator lies in its curated library of trending memes and internet culture references. This library, maintained by an editorial team, is designed to inspire users to create AI-generated images based on current online phenomena, such as the McDonald’s CEO taste-testing a burger or “frame-mogging.”
Conjure: A Daily Photo Prompt App with an “AI Spirit”
Conjure draws inspiration from the once-popular BeReal app, prompting users to share daily photos. However, instead of focusing on self-portraits, Conjure provides creative prompts, such as “What lies between the trees and the moon?” The app likewise features an “AI spirit for a CEO,” though the specifics of this feature remain unclear.
Quiz Party: Leveraging BuzzFeed’s Core Strength
Quiz Party allows users to take BuzzFeed’s signature quizzes with friends and share their results, aiming to capitalize on the company’s established strength in interactive content.
SXSW Reception and Financial Context
The presentation of Branch Office at SXSW was met with a lukewarm response from the audience, with reports of silence and uncomfortable laughter following the app demos. This reception occurred shortly after BuzzFeed disclosed a net loss of $57.3 million in the previous year and expressed concerns about its financial viability. The company is now prioritizing its Studio IP and new AI applications as part of its turnaround strategy.
During a Q&A session, questions were raised about the potential for user retention, drawing parallels to BeReal’s struggles. BuzzFeed representatives suggested that the apps would evolve and incorporate features like video, audio, and integration with tools like Claude Code to enhance community engagement.
The Future of AI and Software as Content
Peretti posited that “software is the new content,” suggesting that AI can accelerate software development and enable faster iteration to maintain user engagement. However, the success of Branch Office will depend on attracting and retaining users, a challenge that BuzzFeed has yet to demonstrate it can overcome. The company’s focus appears to be on the capabilities of AI rather than a clear understanding of user needs and desires.
