BYD’s Megawatt Charging Revolutionizes EV Infrastructure

BYD is rapidly establishing itself as a leader in electric vehicle (EV) technology, particularly in the realm of ultra-fast charging. While facing challenges in European charging speed adoption, the company is making significant strides in its home market of China, launching ten new models capable of charging at speeds exceeding any other production vehicle currently available. This advancement centers around BYD’s Super e-Platform and its ability to deliver up to 1-megawatt (1,000 kilowatt) charging capabilities.

The Super e-Platform and Blade 2.0 Battery Technology

A year ago, BYD announced its 1000V architecture with the potential for up to 1MW charging. Now, this technology is becoming a reality with the introduction of the Super e-Platform, underpinning a new generation of EVs. Central to this is the Blade 2.0 battery, utilizing Lithium Iron Phosphate (LFP) chemistry. BYD has increased the energy density of the Blade 2.0 battery to between 190 and 210 Wh/kg at the cell level, a substantial improvement over the original 140 Wh/kg from 2020.

While Tesla currently leads in gross energy density with its 4680 cells, relying on more expensive nickel and cobalt, BYD is competitive through efficient battery arrangement and a projected 15% lower cost.

Unprecedented Charging Speeds

The most notable feature of the Super e-Platform is its charging speed. BYD EVs equipped with this technology can reportedly add range from 10% to 70% in as little as 5 minutes, and reach 97% charge in 9 minutes. This performance is particularly impressive, as it surpasses the charging speeds currently available in production vehicles. Even at -30°C, the battery can reach 97% charge in 12 minutes.

1.5 MW Charging Infrastructure

To support these charging speeds, BYD has developed a new generation of charging stations capable of outputting up to 1.5 MW. These stations utilize a 1000V architecture but focus on delivering extremely high amperage – up to 1500A. To prevent overheating, the charging cables and connectors are liquid-cooled. Each charging station also incorporates 200-300 kWh of energy storage to reduce strain on the power grid.

Rollout and Expansion Plans

BYD plans to deploy 20,000 of these charging stations across China by December 2026, with 18,000 located in cities and 2,000 along highways. As of March 5, 2026, 4,239 stations had already been completed, with the first 1,000 highway sites scheduled for operation before May 1, 2026. Construction is also slated to begin in Europe later in 2026, prioritizing countries with existing BYD factories, such as Hungary.

The BYD Seal 08 sedan, with a projected range exceeding 1,000 kilometers, utilizes the Blade 2.0 battery. The Yangwang U7, achieving a 1006 km range, employs a 150 kWh battery, suggesting a similar capacity for the Seal 08. Interestingly, the Seal 08 operates on an 800V system yet still supports the same rapid charging speeds.
