Cabinet sees movement in budget talks with Pro, Volt and ChristenUnie

Pro-leader Klaver stated that he sees “bereidheid” from the cabinet to accommodate his party’s positions, particularly regarding social security and proposed cuts, after a meeting with Prime Minister Jetten and Finance Minister Heinen.

The discussions mark an ongoing effort by the minority coalition to secure parliamentary majorities for upcoming fiscal policies. Jetten previously outlined what he described as a new and attractive offer to draw support from both the left and right flanks of the opposition, focusing on purchasing power, the future of the social system, and tax reforms.

Social Security and Wealth Tax Discussions

While Klaver acknowledged movement on social security protections, he noted that key areas remain unresolved. Specifically, he pointed to the wealth tax—known as box 3—where he observed no policy shifts yet. Haagse insiders confirmed to the Telegraaf that the cabinet is currently aiming for an accelerated phase-out of box 3 while taxing wealthy individuals through alternative mechanisms.

Volt-leader Dassen, who has coordinated positions with Klaver, also offered a cautiously positive assessment after the talks. Both party leaders emphasized that final agreements will depend heavily on concrete implementation details, noting that the “devil in the details” remains a hurdle.

ChristenUnie Evaluates Cabinet Proposals

ChristenUnie leader Bikker and MP Grinwis held the first round of Saturday morning discussions with Heinen and Jetten. Bikker stated afterward that the cabinet had listened well, noting a distinct sense of urgency and unity within the administration.

For ChristenUnie, winter energy costs and affordable grocery prices for households remain central priorities. Bikker expressed tentative optimism regarding these measures but stressed the need to see the proposals fully worked out on paper. She also noted that the cabinet has engaged with social partners such as labor unions and employers, leaving it to the polder model institutions to evaluate those specific steps.

Next Steps for Budget Negotiations

Prime Minister Jetten expressed confidence in reaching an agreement with ChristenUnie, reiterating that building a broad parliamentary foundation for major reforms remains a primary objective. Following Saturday’s meetings with ChristenUnie, Jetten and Heinen scheduled further talks with the SGP and JA21, with discussions involving 50Plus and BBB planned for after the weekend.
