Cagliari Council Pushes for Dedicated Visual Rehabilitation Center
The Cagliari City Council has formally approved an agenda item to establish or restore a public visual rehabilitation center for blind and visually impaired citizens. Through the support of Social Policy Councilor Anna Puddu, the municipal government has committed to petitioning the Sardinia Regional Government to address the city’s current lack of dedicated public facilities for visual impairment support.
Closing the Gap in Local Sociosanitary Infrastructure
Proposed by Forza Italia councilor Roberta Sulis, the initiative highlights a stark reality: Cagliari currently lacks a public or state-affiliated center specialized in visual rehabilitation. This deficiency forces residents to seek private care or travel outside the region to access essential medical and therapeutic services. By formalizing this request, the city aims to guarantee equitable access to health services fundamental to maintaining autonomy and quality of life.
Leveraging Municipal Influence for Regional Action
Although the authority to establish health facilities rests with the Sardinia Regional Government, the Cagliari City Council has pledged to act as a proactive intermediary. Councilor Anna Puddu confirmed that the municipal executive has already begun preliminary discussions with relevant health authorities.
“We have already started discussions regarding the proposal, and the executive’s opinion is favorable,” stated Puddu. “We will act as a stimulus toward the Regional Health Department so that the reopening or establishment of a public visual rehabilitation center in the territory is evaluated.”
Prioritizing Independence and Healthcare Equality
The approved agenda item mandates that the Mayor and the City Council engage with the Regional Health Department to prioritize the creation of a public facility. Furthermore, the council will coordinate with local health agencies, associations for the visually impaired, and third-sector organizations, while promoting public awareness campaigns to foster greater social inclusion.
By advocating for a local facility, the council seeks to reduce the financial and logistical burdens currently placed on patients and their families.
A Unified Path Toward Systemic Integration
The proposal received broad support within the City Council, reflecting a unified commitment to strengthening the city’s social welfare network. As the administration moves forward, the focus remains on securing a formal commitment from regional health planners to integrate these specialized services into the broader Sardinian healthcare system.
