Piner High School Football Team Forfeits Game Following Student Walkout Over Social Media Post
Piner High School forfeited its varsity football game against Archie Williams High School on Friday night, October 9, 2026, after a student-led walkout and a severe shortage of healthy players. USA Today reported that the Santa Rosa, California school was scheduled to play its sixth game of the season in San Anselmo before pulling out of the matchup.
Roster Depletion and Social Media Controversy
The decision to forfeit stemmed directly from a roster crisis, with Gus Morris of The Press Democrat reporting that the Piner Prosectors had only five healthy linemen available for the game. This lack of players followed escalating tensions on campus earlier in the month. A team captain posted Free the Cornell 7
to Instagram, referencing an incident where seven Cornell University students were accused of gang-raping another student during a 2024 fraternity party.
Student Walkout and Accountability Demands
Students at Piner High School staged a campus walkout on Friday, the same day as the scheduled game, to protest what they viewed as a lack of accountability for the player who made the post. SFGATE reported that the player did not attend the team dinner on Thursday night, but school officials did not clarify whether he faced any formal disciplinary consequences.
Season Standing and Upcoming Schedule
With the forfeit loss, Piner drops to a 2-4 record on the season. The team started strong at 2-1 but has now dropped three consecutive games. The Prosectors aim to return to the field on October 16 for a home game against Healdsburg, California.
