California Claims Fourth-Largest Global Economy Ranking in Mid-Year Gross Domestic Product Data

California holds the world’s fourth-largest economy ranking in mid-year gross domestic product data. The state’s GDP reached $4.53 trillion, marking a 5% increase from 2025 output figures based on comparisons between U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis state statistics and International Monetary Fund nation-by-nation estimates for 2026.

California Maintains Rank as World's Fourth-Largest Economy

That $4.53 trillion output places California behind only three national economies globally. The United States leads at $33 trillion with an estimated 6% growth for the year, followed by China at $22 trillion with 10% growth, and Germany at $5.5 trillion with 7% growth. Gross domestic product figures on this scorecard are measured in U.S. dollars without inflation adjustments to maintain a uniform comparison across different countries.

Global Rankings Face Tight Margins and Currency Shifts

The Golden State holds its fourth-place position by a narrow margin. California’s GDP sits just ahead of Japan’s $4.34 trillion economy, which contracted 2% over the past year. Japan ranked as the world’s third-largest economy as recently as 2022 before Germany surpassed it in 2023.

Following Japan, the United Kingdom records a GDP of $4.27 trillion after a 6% annual increase, while India reaches $4.06 trillion with 4% growth. Approximately half a trillion dollars, or 11%, separates California from these closely trailing international economies. Historical GDP revisions from data science updates previously placed California as the fifth-largest global economy from 2019 through the previous year, following initial data that suggested a fourth-place ranking starting in 2024 as highlighted by Gavin Newsom.

Economic Uncertainties and Timeline for Final Results

The 2026 economic metrics remain subject to change as the calendar year continues amid ongoing military and trade conflicts globally. Because calculations rely on U.S. dollars, currency fluctuations impact the final standings, with the American currency appreciating roughly 3% against international currencies during 2026 to elevate the reported output for both the U.S. and California.

Final figures for the full 2026 economic output will not be available until April 2027, when the International Monetary Fund next updates its worldwide gross domestic product data.
