California Emissions Cap: EDF Urges Bold Action for Economic and Climate Benefits
California has an chance to considerably reduce pollution and deliver considerable economic relief to families by adopting a more ambitious emissions cap, according to the Environmental Defense Fund (EDF). The organization is urging the Board to pursue a tighter pollution cap through 2030, exceeding the minimum proposal currently under consideration.
EDF asserts that a stronger cap will not only accelerate pollution reduction – potentially removing 586 million more tons of climate-altering pollution between 2027 and 2045,as demonstrated by Greenline Insights modeling – but also generate significant cost savings for households. Specifically, families earning $100,000 or less could see savings of $600 million, while those earning under $70,000 could benefit from $2.2 billion in savings.
“The conclusion of this process is more crucial than how it starts,” stated Katelyn Roedner Sutter, California Senior Director at EDF. “We are pleased to see the Board resume its rule-making and urge them to take swift,bold action. A more ambitious cap on pollution will cut more costs for families, especially families with lower incomes, while providing more economic and climate benefits that grow over time.”
EDF emphasizes the importance of proactive climate action to mitigate the growing risk of a climate-induced affordability crisis, driven by increasingly frequent and severe disasters.
