Understanding the Rise of Influenza A H3N2 Subclade K
The Spanish Society of Family and Community Medicine (semFYC) is closely monitoring the current surge in influenza cases driven by subclade K of the influenza A H3N2 virus. Dr. José maría Molero, spokesperson for the Infectious Diseases Working Group, explains that this variant has specific genetic changes in hemagglutinin. Thes changes make it harder for our immune systems too recognize and fight off the virus, contributing to its rapid spread.
Despite the increased contagiousness, semFYC emphasizes reinforcing prevention, practicing self-care, and using health services responsibly. The alterations caused by subclade K don’t indicate a more severe form of the virus. “It has not been shown that it is a more serious virus or that it produces more cases of hospital admissions or complications,” says Molero.Though, a more transmissible virus inevitably infects more vulnerable individuals, potentially increasing the number of complications.

Peak of the Epidemic
Experts estimate the peak of this epidemic wave will likely occur during the last week of the year.Though, colder weather and increased social gatherings during the Christmas season could bring the peak slightly earlier. The decline following the peak may also be slower than the initial rise, due to the continued circulation of other influenza viruses.
The semFYC Working Group on Infectious Diseases notes that, even amidst this flu pandemic, responsible healthcare utilization remains crucial.
